About the book itself: A few letters – a big meaning.
The acronym [DNIJGI] in full letters grows into «Don't name it Just game it».
Continuously overthink, is what humans tend to do most of the time instead of acting.
NOTE: PLEASE GIVE THIS PAGE SOME TIME TO LOAD ITS WHOLE POTENTIAL.
Loose letters into shape
In a first time, I got lots of loose text, my client wanted to get into a nice shape. Principally he wished orange to be a conductive and outstanding color. But also he wanted everything being connected, while the texts themselves weren't necessarily connected one to the other.
OKAY, so let's do this! This means: classic layout work in Adobe InDesign.
The main aim of Don't name it Just game it was about thinking outside of a box.
Cool! This gives an outline for the layout itself: make it square! But still outside of a box.
Give it a special look, which does speak for itself when on display, but also make a difference in the feel of the book itself, to be different amongst a whole pile of books. Let it be haptic like a stamp.
Huh, how about connecting the paperwork like a conductive red line? Well, why not just draw a line through all the pages, consecutive from the very first page till the last one? Great!
PILOT RUN
From the very beginning, I have been part of the project and also the writing process. This was very fortunate and advantageous in terms of not getting beaten by a whole bunch of pages.
What I mean is, I had a pretty good overview. This was kind of exceptional, as I could bring my thoughts in from an early stage on.
This includes, that I assisted the whole project from the moment the book itself, left the authors computer. So I got in contact with a printing plant I knew for their very good communication and of course also their work itself.
One more time the results here look good and satisfying for not being calibrated. Before proceeding for the final print, I am going through verifying the layout is on point and also I handed one out to the client for proofreading.
PRINTing it for real
First of all the printing machine got calibrated by their technicians. Due to the number of pages, even though the client only wanted one single edition, I decided to print the whole project eight times, making sure I will be able to recover, if anything goes wrong, without having to come back and in the worst case having to deal with different colors.
STAMP IT
As I said it in the introduction, I wanted this book to make a difference from the first glance by incorporating the main meaning – thinking outside of a box.
In addition to this, I wanted the book to also play on the feel when been taken in hand, by a very special relief all-around. For this I got a first the inspiration of braille typography, but judged this being difficult to implement all-over the book. A step further I have been brought thinking about the perforated style a typical stamp has.
It needed a lot of research and more approximately a hundred phone calls, to find this little store (former printing shop) that could help me on that very special vision I have come up with.
It was a pain in the back, but the result was literally outstanding!
CUTTING THE EDGE
In a nightshift I got back on my previously perforated and cut printing sheet, to do a blow-by-blow hand separation of the perforated edges to the original page.
Also I started a meticulous examination of every single page and stacked them up on eight piles, sorting out the very best edition to the least good, to know where to start to build the dummy.
Also I had a first approach on a premium packaging, I just got asked for, which you can see here.
TIME FOR DUMMY
To me it is crucial to always give a first attempt to a project that aims to turn out excellent, before it comes to the very best edition.
It's simple as that:
Stop thinking, start acting.
This is, what my clients mainly know me for:
Perfect results, due to my eye I bring to the very little details and 100% personal assistance of their project: from the very beginning of the briefing, till the end result rolls out and is hold in hand of themselves.
